Bresslergroup Wins Coveted Design Awards

Philadelphia, PA – May 10, 2007 –Bresslergroup won two prestigious awards for the design of the Infrascanner™, handheld brain hematoma detector manufactured by fellow Philadelphia company, Infrascan. Inc. The device was awarded a gold Excellence In Design award by the Appliance Design Magazine and an honorable mention in the ID Magazine Annual Design Review. This gold award, in the medical equipment category, brings the total to 8 that Bresslergroup has won since 2000 in the Appliance Design Magazine’s competition. The product will be honored in the June 2007 issue of the Appliance Design Magazine and in the August 2007 issue of ID Magazine.

Appliance Design contest judge, Amy Potts called the Infrascanner “a beautiful solution for a real need.” While Belze calls the product game changing. “This product’s technical merits alone are worthy of a considerable praise. That the product’s design reflects the characteristics of the environment in which it will be used and the people who will use it without compromising technical capability is utterly impressive.”

This non-invasive handheld imaging device uses near infrared (NIR) technology for the rapid detection of hematoma, or bleeding in the brain. While CAT Scans (CT) are currently the diagnostic standard for hematomas, many head trauma patients do not quickly receive a CT scan due to cost and availability issues. Medical personnel can operate the universally-designed Infrascanner with little or no prior instruction. The scanner is especially valuable in the field, as treatment within the first or “golden hour” is critical.

One of Bresslergroup’s largest contributions was helping InfraScan, Inc. better understand their diverse user group. Through research, Bresslergroup determined a list of user needs by examining and role playing use scenarios in such differing environments as the scene of an accident, hospital emergency rooms / ICU units, and military applications. Sometimes the patient is lying down, sometimes sitting, either conscious or unconscious, and operators have to take readings at eight sites on the head regardless of patient position. The Infrascanner addresses this unmet medical need for a simple, low-cost, accurate hematoma detection device for use in a variety of settings.
