DESCRIPTION: Creating the Conditions for Change: Integrating the principles of sustainability into design practice and production. Valerie Casey of IDEO and founder of The Designers Accord provides practical advice on integrating the principles of sustainability into design practice and production. Ms. Casey will present the progress of the Designers Accord movement and discuss how participating design firms, educational institutions, and corporations throughout the world are making change. The lecture is hosted by Philadelphia product design firm, Bresslergroup and IDSA Philly. SRS Energy's new solar roofing system will also be showcased.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Valerie Casey heads a global practice at IDEO, where she provides strategic leadership for client relationships. Valerie designs socially and environmentally sustainable products, services, and business models for organizations around the world. She specializes in integrating community-building strategies from real and virtual environments to leverage the potential of networked culture.

Valerie founded the Designers Accord, a call to arms for the creative community to reduce the negative impact caused by design, and to work collaboratively to inspire positive change in industry and consumer behavior. There are almost 100,000 designers, educators, researchers, engineers, and business strategists, from over 100 countries, participating in the Designers Accord.

Before taking on her current role at IDEO, Valerie was Executive Creative Director at frog design, where she led the global design research and design strategy practices. Previously, Valerie was an Associate Partner at Pentagram Design, where she built the interaction design practice in San Francisco, and an Associate Creative Director at vivid studios.

Valerie has published and lectured on design throughout the international community, and is an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts. She holds a master's degree in cultural theory and design from Yale University, and a BA from Swarthmore College.
