The keypad consists of several types of controls including alphabetical, numerical, navigation, modal and even softkeys that change their function with the user interface. Key placement, color and shape coding were used to identify and differentiate these various types of key functions. For example, navigation and data entry keys are blue, while numerical and function keys are black.
The resulting ergonomically designed printer fits a firm grip and helps to protect the unit in case of an accidental drop. The printer UI features the largest backlit LCD screen among all handheld thermal labels printers. It allows users to easily see information on display and is especially useful in low-light conditions. The oversized, wide-spaced keys were documented and designed to prevent hitting multiple buttons by mistake. Hard-coded function keys provide access to frequently used functions of the UI. Soft-menu keys are ideal for infrequent functions.
