Air Products Portable Oxygen Concentrator

Air Products developed the proof of concept model for a lightweight, portable oxygen concentrator which would deliver up to 5 liter/minute high purity oxygen. Bresslergroup joined the development team to help commercialize the new technology. Research included significant competitive and user research to define the system feature set.

Imagine
Human factors requirements for weight, size, noise and other user centric features drove the design team toward the smallest possible package size. Mechanical and electronics were developed in parallel to ensure efficiency of design. The team also investigated appropriate aesthetics to identify appropriate styling options for the device which wanted to be discrete while fostering pride in new found mobility.

Implement
Meeting low weight and noise targets drove significant engineering effort to optimize the package. Patients often sleep while using the device and don’t want to cart around a noisy unit. Interface elements an electronic controls were also developed for ease of use and failsafe performance.

Impact
Air Products was granted several patents for the new technology, which is applicable to other small O2 generating products. The core concentrator was licensed to a 3rd party for ultimate commercialization.
