Cutco Ice Cream Scoop & Cheese Knife

Bresslergroup started the user research phase with competitive analysis across the range of tools Cutco identified. Our product design firm ran user testing with competitive products to determine preferences. We also studied usability issues through observation and video tape analysis for Cutco's New York facility.

Imagine
The product line needed a distinct family look and feel which was challenging due to handle requirements across a range of tool types - from cheese knife to ice cream scoop, garlic press and more. Ergonomics drove the basic handle forms and our product design firm created a formal vocabulary as well as materials and color selection that tied the devices together. Our product designers and engineers also devised simple but effective differentiable features for each product, like a kickstand to hold the ice cream scoop head off the counter top - eliminating sticky messes.

Implement
Bresslergroup product design team members drove the handle form development using SolidWorks for, with Cutco’s team in New York concentrating on implementation of the cast metal and blade parts. We also introduced overmolding to Cutco's materials and processes regimen resulting in very comfortable handled tools.

Impact
The cheese knife and ice cream scoop were launched together and quickly became Cutco's most successful product launch in history. To date, the pair is responsible for over $7 million in sales. Recently designed line extensions include a garlic press and a can opener due out in the very near term.
