Dentsply / Cavitron Prophy-Jet
Numerous dental operatory observations and interviews were conducted
and significant potential user features were uncovered.
Imagine
The new concept that was proposed included new user features
and unique cost saving manufacturing strategies. Instead of
the usual box base and lid configuration, Bresslergroup proposed
an enclosure that split front and rear. The concept included
an integrally molded air, water manifold and connector system
that would be common to all products in the line. This "power
module' back case would be included with the appropriate front
case configuration for models with varied features. The result
was a line of enclosures that used fewer tools and inventoried
fewer parts. It also placed the user interface at a 45 degree
angle allowing the user to mount it in any orientation or even
place it in a drawer while keeping the controls accessible.
Implement
The concept direction was supported by management at Dentsply
at all levels. It was determined, however, that the "power
module" back would be too costly to develop with existing
Dentsply resources.
Impact
While the concept was never fully implemented, the angled knob
concept was included in the next generation product line developed
by Dentsply engineering.
