Onity Electronic Hotel Lock

Contextual design research definition drove this project from the start. Bresslergroup's investigation started with key customers and ended with global hotel guests. All parties were heard from. Along the way we performed competitive feature analysis, global hotel style surveys, and significant usability testing. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative techniques, we were able to feed the development process with solid inputs and validate our design decisions. Observation of hotel guests was part of our contextual design research definition of what the new product should be.

Imagine
The ideation process began with the mechanical design components including the clutch which was moved to the inside of the door for additional security. Based on contextual design research and human factors analysis, we determined user preference for horizontal card insertion. So, the card reader was placed through the door. From there, graphic elements were added to the card reader slot to help users understand how to insert the card properly. We used contextual design research methods to determine the effectiveness of the new graphics using models representing the design options and observing users unlocking doors without instruction. The aesthetics were developed in parallel to fit with a broad range of hotel types and decors. Our hotel interiors contextual design research definition drove this exploration.

Implement
Bresslergroup designed the entire system in 3D using Pro/E. Finite Element Analysis helped the team prove out the design digitally. Significant research, prototyping, and empirical testing paved the way for refinement for efficient beta testing and mass production. Bresslergroup also helped Onity identify and qualify a new wave of production resources both domestically and in Mexico, where Onity's new plating and assembly operation was coming online.

Impact
The new lock has received rave reviews from customers and from the design press. The fact that the design resonated with users and hoteliers alike can be attributed to effective use of contextual design research and definition of the right feature set. For the first time, Onity has been able to open new doors with higher end hotel chains who truly appreciate the aesthetic flexibility and basic elegance offered through the new system design. In addition, Appliance Manufacturer has honored the design with their annual Excellence in Design award.
