Vidar XR-12 X-ray Digitizer
Vidar is a leader in new product development medical field. In addition, they manufacture and sell large document scanners. The XR-12 digitizer was Vidar's first venture into the medical field. Their engineering team provided the new product components and specifications and Bresslergroup's new product development team initiated onsite research in radiology labs to define user needs. These medical products were complex, expensive and took up lots of room in radiology labs - which are loaded with large devices competing for limited space.
Imagine
Bresslergroup's new product concepts included a version with a radical vertical format - an uncommon paradigm for the medical field. The vertical format uses rollers to feed the film past the scanner, reducing film scratches. The vertical format reduces use of hospital counter space by 50% (a huge premium) and costs 30% less than competitive product due to a much smaller enclosure and the reduction of moving parts.
Implement
Industrial design layouts and renderings were formalized and provided to the Vidar team with critical dimensions. We also worked closely with Vidar to strategize materials and processes and guide the device through production.
Impact
The XR-12 was brought to market at a sale price 25% below their nearest competitors, and within 18 months earned 70% market share. This rapid adoption is almost unheard of for a new product in the medical field. It maintained this supremacy until being replaced by the next generation unit from Vidar. The XR-12 won a Gold Industrial Design Excellence Award for new product development in the medical field.
