Bresslergroup’s objective in the new product development strategy
was to create a new and distinctive line of kitchen tools to
complement Cutco’s line of cutlery and cookware. The first products
to be introduced include an ice cream scoop and a cheese knife,
followed by a garlic press and can opener. The line was also
planned for expansion to include additional kitchen tools in
the future. The most significant challenge in the new product
development strategy was to create a handle look and feel that
held together across a range of very different tools. So we created
a Kitchen Tool Usability Matrix which detailed requirements for
distinct grip, motion and handle orientation. Additionally, Cutco
sells by demonstration and relies on interesting features to
distinguish their products from traditional retail competitors.
They charge premium prices and as such require that each new
product in the line provide unique and demonstrable features
geared towards the new product development strategy.
