Ideation

Traditional smoke detectors are ubiquitous. They have become commodity items and as such formal and visual differentiation between competitors is almost non-existent. Our challenge was, through product form and POS packaging, to suggest basic smoke detector performance and reliability while communicating the added value and uniqueness of the voice record and playback features. Our process also dictates that the internal volumes be defined in parallel with ideation so that even early concepts are known to be feasible – that means ID, electrical and mechanical engineers working concurrently toward the solution. The resulting conceptual forms call attention to the high quality speaker volumes and feature easy to understand and use controls.
