Mobile Interface Design

Designing user experiences for handheld and mobile devices entails much more than scaling traditional desktop interface paradigms to smaller screens. Effective handheld and mobile user interface guidelines depend on an overlapping, but distinctive set of user interface guidelines that take into account mobile user interface factors including:

•    Quantity and visibility of information that can be displayed at smaller mobile device screen sizes and lower resolutions

•    Design of user interface control ergonomics and touch screen interactions that are constrained by mobile / handheld device size and capabilities

•    Task analysis of mobile user interaction behaviors.  When interacting with a mobile or handheld device, a user is more likely to be multitasking and have divided attention compared to traditional desktop user interfaces.

The continuing convergence of digital interfaces with physical products is putting interaction designers in a position where knowledge of anthropometrics, kinesthetics, and other non-cognitive human capabilities is valuable for creating effective user interface design solutions.
