User Interface Development
Documenting the UI and interaction specifications for this type of project includes the design and development of:
- Interaction design diagrams to document and depict the flow of user tasks through representation use case scenarios.
- User interface mapping that documents the visual and physical attributes of controls to their functions and associated display behavior
- Demonstration prototypes that provide. reference animation and visual transitions to help in documenting UI. These are not only valuable for user interface documentation, but may be utilized to test technical feasibility and gather user input via usability testing.
A recent example of design and documenting UI is our mechanical and digital UI work on the recently launched Thomas & Betts EZCODE Professional Labeling System. This handheld, professional tool creates labels for electricians in the field. Labeling is critical for safety, diagnostics and regulatory compliance. The project included up-front user research, competitive analysis, industrial design and interaction design, including keypad layout and graphics and documenting UI. Bresslergroup also developed the point of sale packaging for the new unit. This soup to nut involvement ensures consistent delivery of T&B’s brand message and makes touch points consistent from purchase, through setup and use.
Field ethnographic research helped our team understand usability issues in real life situations. Our PhD led research team observed and interviewed professional electricians to define key issues and opportunities to improve usability. A review of competitor devices revealed opportunities for improvement in overall ergonomics for holding the device and by documenting their UI, we were able to define ways to create a more seamless workflow with our new device. Different users have varying hand size and date entry preferences, as well as specific configuration recommendations for one and two handed typing patterns. This analysis extended the ergonomics of the keypad layout.
