Bresslergroup is excited to host a TechGirlz TechShop and the Philly & Pi Birthday Jam on Saturday, March 3rd, Raspberry Pi’s 6th birthday. The event is part of a community-led, synchronized “mega-Jam” coordinated globally by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Prior to the main event, TechGirlz will take over Bresslergroup’s studio from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Scratch and Raspberry Pi Workshop for 20 middle school-aged girls. TechGirlz is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the gender gap in technology occupations by focusing on girls at the crucial middle school age. Their free workshops get girls interested in different kinds of technology, show them varied career options, and connect them with professionals in technology fields. This event is one of ten TechShopz happening on March 3rd around the country to celebrate a tremendous milestone for TechGirlz: 10,000 girls who have been to a TechShop. Bresslergroup is thrilled to donate equipment to make the Scratch and Raspberry Pi Workshop possible.
Next up, the Birthday Jam, which is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m., will consist of workshops, demos, and talks given about Raspberry Pi and IoT related technologies by local technology professionals. Brad Derstine from local meetup, Coffee & Pi, will show dueling Tiny 4WD robots that are controlled with wireless PlayStation 3 controllers and invite visitors into a Raspberry Pi selfie photo booth. Coded by Kids volunteers will be on hand to guide interested kids (and parents!) through a basic website building exercise using HTML & CSS.
Hopeworks Camden will demonstrate a miniature flying blimp powered by a Raspberry Pi, as well as hosting a demo from projects built by some of their students. And Philly GraphDB will show how you can screen scrape web content, store it and process data using the Neo4j(Graph Database) on a Raspberry Pi. Their goal is to scrape online science news feeds so we can gather engaging content for user to interact with. Users will be able to tag their favorite content and share it with friends.
Join us this Saturday for the Philly jawn of this global tech mega-Jam!
